Mark your calendars y’all as SM City Cebu presents the 2nd Sinulog Pyrofest on January 16, 2010, Saturday, fronting the Northwing. Here’s a recap of the 1st Sinulog Pyrofest held last year so that you’ll have an idea of what to expect…
A night before the 29th Sinulog Grand Parade last January 18, 2009, all eyes were in the sky and were dazzled in the glare brought about by the first ever Sinulog Fireworks Competition at the vacant lot fronting the Northwing of SM City Cebu.
For the first time ever since Sinulog Festival started in 1980, Cebuanos and tourists, local and foreign alike, were treated to a spectacular visual feast of colorful and bright fireworks displays. The management of SM City Cebu presented itself to shoulder the prizes for the competition, which was participated by different fireworks suppliers from all over the archipelago.
Cebu was represented by Barangay Babag of Lapulapu City. The other contestants were from Oroquieta City (Misamis Occidental), Bohol, Dumaguete City (Negros Occidental), Bocaue (Bulacan) and Metro Manila (the group responsible for Enchanted Kingdom’s fireworks displays).
The contest started at around 9pm. Each team was judged according to the design, colors, timing and execution of their fireworks, and ofcourse, audience impact.
Here are some photos I took during the event:
Babag, Lapulapu City

Bocaue, Bulacan

Bohol

Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental – WINNER

Enchanted Kingdom

Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental

After the awarding of winners, everyone thought that the night was over and that they’ve had enough of fireworks but then Pyroworks, a pyrotechnic enterprise proudly located in Cebu, surprised everyone with a demonstration of their newly acquired technology, a remote digital firing system, which allowed fireworks and music to go in sync:

The first Sinulog Fireworks Competition ended with a bang and despite it being the first, it was definitely very successful. I was also successful in my mission since it was my first time to shoot fireworks. I was soooo nervous because I was unsure if I would be able to shoot properly, but I applied what I’ve read and learned online and I’m totally satisfied with the shots I’ve managed to take. I’m, beyond any doubt, already excited about and sooo looking forward to the 2nd Sinulog Pyrofest less than two weeks from now. Excited? The management of SM City Cebu promises a grander spectacle of fireworks with even more participants joining this year, so stay tuned to this blog for updates on that.
Meanwhile, I’ll be sharing about SM City Cebu’s Rizal Day Fireworks Display on my next post.
